In 1776 Adam Smith published his magisterial work ‘The Wealth of Nations’ that propounded the causes of economic growth. Over the course of over 200 hundred years, seminal contributions in Classical, Austrian, Marxian, Keynesian and Neoclassical traditions have emerged that have attempted to explain the causes of economic development. These contributions inspire this concentration in development economics that provides an opportunity to study the causes and dynamics underlining world poverty, income distribution, institutional change, asymmetries in social development and appropriate interventions to address these issues. The program is unique in Pakistan for taking into account theoretical perspectives nationally ignored, albeit gaining importance internationally for explaining development issues. Thus the program combines theoretical and empirical research in a manner that let students approach development problems, especially those of the developing world, from perspective of various schools of thought and eventually aiming to have wider understanding of the development related issues. This is complemented with rigorous training in econometric techniques essential for carrying out empirical work in the area. This program is recommended for students interested in area of planning and the appropriate placement of employment are relevant government institutions, NGO’s and research institutes. The first two years of program consists of basic theoretical and quantitative economics along with mandatory general courses. In the following two years students will take wide range of courses which broadly covers topics like development economics policy; development economics theory; economic performance & challenges in Pakistan; economics of conflict & crime; economics of natural resources; games for development economics; globalization & economic integration; health inequality & development; major debates in economic development I & II; the economics of poverty alleviation; topics in micro data handling; trade, development & growth; urban economics; welfare economics & equity. By the end of the degree students are expected to:
- Have essential theoretical knowledge major topics in micro and macroeconomics.
- To have insights into development theories of major economic schools of thought.
- To have understanding of causes of poverty and social underdevelopment in the developing world.
- To be able to build upon theoretical and empirical knowledge in proposing strategies for poverty alleviation and social uplifting.

In addition to the course work, as described, Internship / Industry experience of 6 credit hours will be offered in summer semester tentatively after 5th Semester (junior year). This is mandatory for all students.
